Welcome to year 1.
We offer a broad and balanced approach following the National Curriculum. We want all children to be happy and to work in a calm and productive environment, where they build friendships, feel valued and are successful. Year one is the first year of Key Stage 1 and we want to ensure the children gain the skills to move onto the next year and build upon the hard work and achievements from the Foundation Stage. Children are expected to become fluent and independent readers and writers. We also believe that children should become increasingly independent, be able to take responsibility for themselves, develop perseverance, resilience and empathy. We encourage the children to become self-motivated and determined to reach their potential and be successful.
In Year One children have a daily phonics, English and Mathematics session. Children’s phonic knowledge is assessed using the National Phonics screening check in the Summer Term.
We appreciate that many parents work long hours, but it is really helpful to listen to children read regularly (aiming for short sessions of daily reading) and to support their learning. A key to a successful education is the ability to read well. A lot of information about how you can help, understand and support with ideas and activities is written in the class newsletter.
We use the Jolly Phonics scheme for the teaching of early letters and sounds which then leads on to the reading scheme, Oxford Reading Tree.
